As human civilisation continues to flourish, further evolving into the 21st Century investment in infrastructure and physical development of our living space is an inescapable necessity. Our built environment cannot be advanced without materials extracted from our natural environment. Natural Resources such as mineral aggregates, limestone, gypsum, iron ore, silica, clay, bauxite and a host of other industrial minerals are important constituents of essential refined materials such as Cement, Steel, Aluminium, Concrete, metals, Asphalt and Glass. These, in addition to a host of other naturally occurring minerals comprise the essential building blocks of our Built Environment. Our daily lives are sustained through the consumption of a myriad of terran (latin derivative meaning “of or pertaining to the earth”) resources. Whether it is mined or grown, modern civilisation cannot be sustained without the exploitation of the earth’s resources. At the same time modern civilisation’s trek into the new century cannot be allowed to continue to the detriment of the Biosphere’s resilience.
